And the Best Artist goes to...

It was the day Don Desmond was waiting for… the R2Y ‘So you think you can sing’ karaoke competition 2007 is finally here. According to some sources, he has been practicing a lot for this event and confidently enough to say that he’ll win it. Did he?

The day started out normal but as the time reaches to 6:00pm, everyone was rushing to Bandar Botanic R2Y cell for the karaoke competition. Don Desmond rushed back from Malacca and even though the bus was late, he manages to reach cell on time. By the way, did I mention that he came straight from Malacca to the cell? Yes, his excitement overwhelmed him. Andy Gomez, Abel Raj and Adrian Yap made a surprised visit while still going through their SPM examination papers. I guess they needed a break from the exam stress. And a break they did get from laughing their heads off during the singing.

The surprise package came with Ps. Ronald’s youth cell. We have actually only expected to see around 9 young people joining us for this event. However, he came with a van load of about 16 young people. WOW!!! And of course we were overjoyed by their presence. At this juncture, we can feel that Don’s heart was beating faster already with the rising competition and challenge. Before Ps. Ronald’s cell came, Bawanie Rachel could have easily walked away with the best female artist title since she was the only lady there. Thank God for Ps. Ronald’s cell as this added a little bit of competition but unfortunately for Bawanie Rachel, they swept away with the best female artist title.

Su Ling tried her best in competing with Bawanie Rachel but I think she chose the wrong song. She only managed to impress the judge with her wonderful chorus but didn’t know how to go about the stanza. She was trying to stay alive in the competition by singing ‘Staying Alive’.

The best female artist goes to Ms. Rumin from Ps. Ronald’s cell singing a song, an old song that I have forgotten the title but if you are a pianist, you will know because you will have to learn this song while practicing your piano.

The best random foreign song goes to Dexter Teh. Adrian Yap tried to beat him with his ‘SAAN’ song but Dexter’s random song that sounds like a combination of fast and slow, rap and pause very long song won the day for him with 98 points. He is still the best random song artist.

Don Desmond walked away with the best male artist title scoring 98 points singing ‘tie a yellow ribbon on the old oak tree’. His nearest competitor only managed to score 96 points.

Congratulation to the winners! And to those who didn't win, I have a feeling the next round of karaoke isn't that far off really. Keep singing...

Oh yeah, did I mentioned that while the competition was intense in the hall, the kitchen area was also hot and intense. The food doesn’t seem to be able to pass the dining area towards the people without disappearing from the tray. That is because some people decided to take up resident near the dining area and do what do best… eat. Hahaha… Anyway, thank God for Aurther Keng as he untiringly prepare the toast and serves his fellow artists who are being entertained by the singers.

And of course, once cell has ended, those who are waiting for their transport couldn’t help it but to continue singing their night away…

Thank you all for coming and making this event a success. I’m sure everyone enjoyed themselves a lot especially laughing at people trying to sing. Nevertheless, it was just fun being around young people. They somehow have a way of making everything fun.

May God bless you all…
